15-30 min appointment depending on how many cosmetic areas are treated. The medium depth peels that Dr. Schwendiman uses are meant to only be performed no more than 1-2 times per year. Superficial exfoliation peels, acne peels, or melasma peels, for those interested in non-oral treatment, are usually performed every 4-6 weeks until desired effects are achieved.
Chemical Peels are skincare treatments that involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the top layers of the skin to peel off, revealing newer, smoother skin underneath. These treatments are commonly used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, chest, neck, or hands.
“The difference between a medical grade chemical peel and one you can buy over the counter is the depth of tissue destruction, the subsequent activation of fibroblasts to synthesize collagen, and 10+ years of experience,” explains Mark Schwendiman, DO. “I like chemical peels because the results are instantaneous and they can be tailored individually for depth. They are perfect for patients who wish for a wide variety of concerns to be addressed at the same time. Want more even pigmentation? Want direct stimulation of collagen? Want an overall brightening of your countenance? Want the protective effects of reducing skin damage and lowering risk of skin cancer? Want a tightening of your skin or perhaps smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles? There are so many benefits wrapped in one treatment!”
There are different types of chemical peels available, ranging from superficial peels, which target only the outermost layer of skin, to deeper peels, which penetrate deeper into the skin for more dramatic results. The choice of peel depends on the specific skin concerns being addressed and the desired level of exfoliation. A pretreatment regimen is started prior to the peel to reduce risk of infection and speed healing time after the peel. Chemical peels can cause some temporary side effects, such as redness, irritation, and peeling, as well as increased sensitivity to the sun. It is crucial to follow post-treatment care instructions and use sun protection to minimize the risk of complications.
Patients who have deeper facial wrinkles, or loss of subcutaneous fullness, would benefit more from resurfacing lasers or dermal fillers. We have several dermatologists in our clinic who provide these services.
