Time:

How It Works

The Fraxel laser divides the laser beam into thousands of tiny, microscopic treatment zones known as microthermal zones (MTZs). These MTZs are small, evenly spaced columns of laser energy that penetrate into the skin.

When the laser energy is applied to the skin, it creates controlled microscopic injuries within the MTZs. These injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin fibers.

Time:

The appointment is approximately 2 hours, with one hour spent applying topical numbing to the treatment area. Healing time is 1-2 weeks. Normally, it takes about 1 week for the skin to re-epithelialize following fractional ablation, and then about two weeks for the post-laser redness to improve. This can take longer depending on the person. Patients need to avoid sunlight and cosmetic products on the skin during the first two weeks. Treatments may be repeated every 2-3 months for scars or focal problem areas. Full face and eyelid treatments may be repeated every 6-12 months.

By removing the damaged outer layers of the skin and stimulating collagen production, CO2 lasers can significantly improve the overall appearance and quality of the skin.

How It Works

The Science

The laser emits a wavelength of light (10,600 nm) that creates heat and destroys epidermal keratinocytes and may extend to the papillary dermis. The laser beam penetrates the top layers of the skin, creating microscopic areas of thermal damage. This stimulates new collagen production resulting in skin tightening and improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

When the CO2 laser beam hits tissue, the energy is absorbed by water molecules within the tissue. This absorption causes the water molecules to heat up rapidly, leading to vaporization of the surrounding tissue (ablation). The laser energy can be precisely controlled to target specific depths of tissue.  Your doctor will customize the parameters according to each patient’s needs.

In addition to ablative effects, CO2 lasers also produce significant thermal energy that penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin. This thermal energy heats up the collagen fibers in the dermis, causing them to contract and stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. This process, known as collagen remodeling, helps improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity over time. The benefits are noticeable as your skin starts healing after the procedure as new skin can appear tighter, smoother, and more elastic fibers.

Here are some things for each patient to consider…

Pain Tolerance

CO2 laser resurfacing can feel like a “hot rubber band slapped repeatedly across your face”! But we have several ways to reduce the discomfort including topical anesthetic ointments, oral sedatives, nerve blocks and infiltration with local anesthesia. People with high pain tolerance levels are ideal candidates for CO2 laser resurfacing. Other treatments might be more comfortable but may not be as effective as ablative laser resurfacing.

Consistent Aftercare

You should know that you might want to take time off work to heal and conceal your flaking, swollen, or pinpoint bleeding side effects. You may experience some bruising, swelling, and wounds on your skin.

During your recovery period, you will need to clean and moisturize your skin more thoroughly than normal. We provide a post-CO2 laser care package of products to be applied the week following the laser with recommendations for use. Clients ready to take time off and invest in the recommended products make good candidates for CO2 laser resurfacing.

Fairer Skin Tone

The CO2 laser treatment is not always a good option for people with darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation, but Dr. Wells has treated several patients with type 4 and 5 skin. Laser light can be absorbed by melanocytes (melanin-producing skin cells) and activate them, causing discoloration or hyperpigmentation. Darker skin tones may do better with Fraxel Laser technology.

Deep vs Shallow Problem Areas

The CO2 laser is effective in reducing dark spots, fine lines, and both superficial and deep wrinkles. Multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal results in both shallow and deep areas. Read more about our CO2 Patients.
